Riser, Kielpinski lead UAA rout of NNU

ANCHORAGE (Feb. 26) - Mari Riser scored a career-high 27 points and Rebecca Kielpinski broke two more UAA freshman records with 18 rebounds Saturday as the UAA women's basketball team rolled to a 68-39 demolition of Northwest Nazarene in front of a packed Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

UAA (12-13, 5-11 GNAC) also got nine points, five rebounds and six assists from their lone senior, Kelsey Larsen, who played her final home game. NNU (16-9, 10-6), which shot just 23 percent from the field and 13 percent from three-point range, was led by seven points from forward Danielle Metz.

NNU entered as the seventh-ranked team in this week's NCAA Div. II West Region poll. The top eight teams in the poll make the NCAA Tournament.

The Seawolves never trailed Saturday as they won for the fourth time in seven games. Leading 8-6 early, Riser scored on a feed from Larsen and followed with two free throws. After Danielle Dwello's layup at the 11:35 mark made it 12-8, the Crusaders managed only one more field goal the rest of the half as they shot 5 of 34 in the opening 20 minutes.

Riser was everywhere on the offensive end, scoring most of her points on slashing moves to the basket. The junior from Utah shot 9 of 15 from the floor, 9 of 9 from the free throw line and dished five assists as she made a handful of crowd-pleasing plays. She also dished five assists for the sixth time this season.

Kielpinski grabbed 11 rebounds in the first half to help the Seawolves to a 30-12 lead at the break, the best first-half defensive performance by a UAA team in the 5-year history of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. In the second half, the 6-2 center came alive offensively with 14 of her 21 points (9-19 FG).

Kielpinski now holds five UAA freshman records - points in a game (31), rebounds in a game (18), rebounds in a season (238), free throws in a season (123) and blocks in a season (47). With two games remaining on the road next week (at Western Oregon, Mar 2; at Humboldt State, Mar. 4), she is 39 points short of tying Robin Graul (1985-86) for the all-time freshman scoring record of 518.

Freshman Kim Brady tied her career-high with four steals and doubled her career-high rebounding mark with eight boards. The Texan also scored eight points on 3-of-4 shooting.
