Seawolves level WOU to even record

MONMOUTH, Ore. (Mar. 2) - Rebecca Kielpinski posted her fifth consecutive double-double and the UAA women's basketball team used a balanced offensive attack Thursday to pull away with a 68-49 victory over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (13-13, 6-11 GNAC) were led by Mari Riser's 16 points, while Kielpinski had 15 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks, and point guard Limor Pelleg had 12 points and a career-high nine assists.

WOU (0-26, 0-17) got 15 points and eight rebounds from forward Leada Berkey as its losing streak reached 32 games.

UAA jumped to an early 14-5 lead before the Wolves fought back to take their first and only advantage at 19-18 with 8:44 left in the first half. Kielpinski then scored four straight points to spark a 14-2 Seawolf run, and UAA took a 32-25 edge into the break.

WOU continued to hang tough, slicing UAA's lead to 40-37 with 11:40 left on the clock. The Seawolves would respond immediately again, however, reeling off the next 14 points, with five different players denting the scoring column. WOU would not draw closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Riser, a junior guard, also had four steals, while senior forward Kelsey Larsen chipped in 12 points (7-8 FT), and freshman guard Kim Brady had seven points and a pair of steals.

With her 15 points, Kielpinski clinched her seventh UAA freshman record (scoring average, 19.3 ppg). The 6-2 center now needs 16 points in her final game to tie Robin Graul's freshman mark of 518 points in 1985-86.

The Seawolves have now won five of their last eight games after a 1-8 start to league play.

UAA's final game is at playoff contender Humboldt State on Saturday, Mar. 4 in Arcata, Calif. (4 p.m. AST). A Seawolf win would give the program its first winning record since 1999-00.
