ANCHORAGE – Rebecca Kielpinski and Jayci Stone combined for 33 points and Alaska Anchorage used a huge advantage from the free throw line Thursday to earn a 57-49 women's basketball victory over Seattle University at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
The Seawolves (13-1, 2-1 GNAC) also got nine points and seven rebounds from senior small forward Mari Callahan to run their home winning streak to 10 games. Seattle (9-4, 1-2) was led by 11 points and eight rebounds from forward Kamrica Ary-Turner.
Thursday's game was predictably rugged as it matched the top two teams in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in terms of both scoring defense and field-goal defense.
UAA seemed in control early, building a 21-10 lead 17 minutes into the game with a stifling half-court effort. But the Redhawks exploded for 12 points in the final 2:22 to trail just 24-22 at halftime, and they kept the pressure on in the second half.
After UAA stretched to a 35-27 on a Stone three-pointer, Seattle answered with a 15-2 run and took a 42-38 lead with 8 minutes remaining. The Seawolves got a baseline jumper from Callahan (4-7 FG, 2 assists) and a pair of Stone free throws to tie it, then retook the lead with 3:17 left, 46-44, on a 17-foot jumper by Callahan.
Meanwhile, the Seawolf defense stiffened once more, holding the Redhawks scoreless on eight straight possessions to build an insurmountable 52-44 lead with 30 seconds to go.
Kielpinski finished with 17 points (5-7 FG, 7-10 FT) and eight rebounds, while Stone scored 16 points (7-8 FT). As a team, the Seawolves made just 16 field goals but were able to outscore their guests 21-6 from the charity stripe.
The win leaves UAA just one victory shy of clinching its first winning season since 1999-00, when it went 21-8 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Seawolves next face 23rd-ranked and defending GNAC champion Western Washington (10-3, 3-0) for a 5 p.m. tip-off Saturday at the WFSC.
