Seawolves can't cool hot Huskies

ST. CLOUD, Minn. ? Alaska Anchorage dropped its fourth consecutive conference game as No. 5 St. Cloud State extended its win streak to 11 games with a 4-2 victory over the Seawolves at the National Hockey Center here tonight.

UAA (10-9-2, 6-9-0 WCHA) owned leads of 1-0 and 2-1 on goals by junior Peter Cartwright and sophomore Jay Beagle, but SCSU (13-3-3, 7-3-3 WCHA) would score the game's final three goals to pull out the win.

Freshman goalie Jon Olthuis recorded 29 saves in his second consecutive start for UAA, including 14 in the final period, while Husky netminder Bobby Geopfert would turn back a game-high 35 Seawolf shots.

Cartwright scored his third goal in three games on a backhander from the right low slot at 8:46 lifting UAA to a 1-0 lead. The Seawolves controlled most of the action in the first 20 minutes, owning an 11-4 advantage in shots.

UAA appeared to go up 2-0 a little over seven minutes into the second, but referee Todd Anderson waived off the goal. SCSU would knot the game up moments later when Ryan Lasch poked in a rebound at the post off a breakaway chance at 7:57.

The Seawolves would have another apparent power-play goal waived off a couple minutes later after Anderson determined that the whistle had blown prior to the puck going into net.

UAA would finally notch its second goal of the night the 13:19 mark of the period when Beagle would jam the puck past Geopfert from the top of the crease giving the Seawolves a 2-1 advantage. SCSU would tie the game before the break however as Andrew Gordon would redirect a Justin Fletcher blast through Olthuis' legs and into net on the power play at 16:58.

The Huskies would go ahead for good on John Swanson's goal at 15:50 of the third while Dan Kronick would put the game out of reach with SCSU's fourth and final goal at 18:21.

The Seawolves, who held a 35-30 edge in shots on goal, were scoreless in three attempts on the power play while the Huskies connected on one of four man-advantage chances.

UAA, who is winless in its last 29 games at SCSU, gets another shot at the Huskies in Saturday's series and season finale at 4:07 p.m.
