NAMPA, Idaho – Mari Callahan scored 14 points and Rebecca Kielpinski recorded another double-double, but it wasn't enough to keep the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team undefeated Saturday in a 63-59 loss to Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.
The Seawolves (12-1, 1-1 GNAC) fought their way back from a 15-point deficit to take a late lead, only to have the Crusaders (7-5, 1-0) score the game's final eight points. Danielle Dwello and Renee Olds led the home team with 14 points apiece.
UAA – which saw the best start in program history come to an end – fell behind 18-6 in the opening 6 minutes and struggled to dig out of the hole all night. A 31-16 deficit was sliced to 35-26 at halftime, and Kielpinski (10 pts, 5-14 FG, 14 rebounds) scored three quick baskets early in the second half to tighten the score.
The Seawolves forged three ties before Callahan and Jayci Stone (5 pts, 5 reb) sank back-to-back baskets for a 59-55 lead with 2:13 remaining. But the Crusaders would make the big plays down the stretch, including a three-pointer from Olds and the game-winning free throws from Dwello.
Jennifer Salazar scored 12 points and guard Meghan Vaughan equaled her career-high for the second straight game with nine points as UAA lost despite a 46-35 rebounding advantage. For Kielpinski, a 6-2 sophomore center, it was her seventh double-double this season and the 21st of her career.
The loss dropped UAA to 0-7 all-time in Nampa.
The Seawolves return to action at home on Thursday, Jan. 11 with a 7 p.m. tip-off against Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe Seattle University at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
