Hot-hitting Falcons deny Seawolves, 3-1

ANCHORAGE ? Rhea Cardwell had 11 kills and 16 digs and Joanna Johnson added 12 kills, but the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team suffered its ninth straight loss Saturday as Seattle Pacific emerged with a 30-15, 30-19, 29-31, 30-18 decision at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

UAA (5-16, 1-14 GNAC), which got outplayed most of the night by the two-time defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions, also had 17 kills apiece from outside hitter Rachel Kidwell and libero Cristal Negron.

SPU (13-9, 8-6) won its fourth straight match and avenged an earlier loss to the Seawolves in Seattle thanks to an incredible effort from its star, Alyssa Given. The senior outside hitter notched 28 kills on .558 hitting (28-4-43) and came up with 15 digs as well. Falcon libero Torii Mount had a match-high 26 digs and served three of her team's 12 aces.

The Falcons dominated most of the night and seemed on their way to an easy sweep with a 28-22 lead in the third. However UAA answered with its best shot of the evening, scoring seven straight points to grab the lead. After SPU's Angie Wodrich (14 kills, 15 digs) tied it at 29 with a kill, the Seawolves took the game with back-to-back kills from Johnson, setting the WFSC crowd into a frenzy.

The party was short-lived, though, as SPU scored the first six points of Game 4 and ran away with the victory.

Junior middle blocker Jessica Morehouse made nine kills and senior Kim Stolk had seven for UAA, while setter Milica Micovic dished 40 assists. In fact, UAA for a season-high .215 attack percentage, but SPU was twice as hot, hitting a blistering .343 on the evening.

UAA makes its final road trip of 2007 when it visits Saint Martin's and Western Oregon next week (Nov. 1 and 3), then closes the season at home with a showdown against arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks on Nov. 10.
