Broncos buck Braves, advance to title game

ANCHORAGE ? Tracey Walker finished just shy of a triple-double and Jen Gottschalk dropped in 22 points Tuesday night to lead Santa Clara into the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout women's title game with a 69-61 win over Bradley at Sullivan Arena.

Alaska native Chandice Cronk tallied 16 points and Elizabeth Doran had 11 for the Broncos (3-1), who move will face host Alaska Anchorage for the title Wednesday at 5 p.m. AST.

Junior forward Monica Rogers scored a game-high 27 points for the Braves (1-3), who drop into Wednesday's third-place game against Cleveland State at 2:30 p.m.

After falling into a 15-4 hole early, Bradley fought back to tie it 34-34 at halftime.

But the Broncos opened the second half with another spurt to go ahead 49-39 with 13:22 remaining.

After Jenny Van Kirk nailed a jumper with 4:53 remaining to draw the Braves within 57-53, Gottschalk answered with a traditional three-point play and SCU held at least a 6-point advantage the rest of the way.

Walker, a 5-6 senior point guard, tallied 19 points (7-12 FG, 3-6 3FG), 10 rebounds and assists, playing all 40 minutes. Cronk, the former Wasilla High star, had a successful homecoming, too, making 6 of 10 from the floor, including 4 of 6 on treys.
