Kielpinski, Nilsson power UAA women

ANCHORAGE – Rebecca Kielpinski grabbed 21 rebounds and Maria Nilsson scored 18 points to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team snap a 3-game losing streak Thursday with a 62-45 victory over Western Oregon at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (15-4, 4-4 GNAC) also got 11 points apiece from guards Tristan Burnett and Meghan Vaughan, while the Wolves (3-16, 2-6) were led by guard Kori Seymour's 20 points, plus a 16-point, 15-rebound outing from forward Leada Berkey.

Kielpinski's rebounding total tied for the third-highest in UAA history and was just one shy of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference record (Kristin Poe, Seattle Pacific).

Meanwhile, Nilsson nailed six three-pointers for the second time this year as the team tied its season-high with 11 total treys.

The Seawolves had a hard time pulling away from the Wolves early, but freshman Keyona Brooks scored a layup just before the half, and UAA turned up its defensive intensity in the second half.

The Seawolves held the visitors from Monmouth, Ore., to just six points in the opening 12 minutes of the second stanza and pushed the lead as high as 21 in the last five minutes.

Vaughan's point total was a career-high, while Burnett tied her season-high from Dec. 4 against BYU-Hawaii.

UAA, undefeated in 11 home games this season, will next take on Saint Martin's on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m.
