SEATTLE – Rebecca Kielpinski scored 19 points and Jayci Stone pulled down 12 rebounds Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team beat host Seattle University 47-38 at the Connolly Center for its fourth straight win.
The Seawolves (18-4, 7-4 GNAC) won the battle of Division II playoff contenders by holding the Redhawks (16-6, 7-4) to just 24 percent shooting and outscoring them 18-9 from the three-point line.
Tristan Burnett scored nine points for the regionally 7th-ranked Seawolves, while Maria Nilsson and Stone added six points apiece. Seattle, ranked 6th in the West Region, was led by forward Laina Sobczak's 12 points.
The win ties UAA with SU for third place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings and gives it the season series sweep.
UAA led for all but two minutes early in the contest, forging a 21-17 halftime lead. The Seawolves maintained that advantage for the rest of the game, finally going up by double digits, 38-28, on a Stone three-pointer with 3:54 to play.
Stone, a senior guard/forward from Goodland, Kan., had her career-high in rebounding and committed no turnovers as she played all 40 minutes.
While Stone did much of the dirty work, sophomore center Kielpinski did the bulk of the offensive with on 7-of-11 shooting and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Kielpinski pulled seven rebounds to have her string of double-digit efforts stopped at seven; she still has 104 boards in the last eight games.
UAA's defensive effort marked the second time in three nights that it held a regionally ranked opponent to under 26 percent shooting, coupled with Thursday's win at Western Washington.
The Seawolves return home now for three straight home games, beginning Feb. 15 when league-leading Seattle Pacific comes to the Wells Fargo Sports Complex (5:30 p.m.).
