ANCHORAGE – Rebecca Kielpinski had 21 points and 10 rebounds Thursday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team remained undefeated at home with a 64-61 victory over Great Northwest Athletic Conference leader Seattle Pacific at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
The Seawolves (19-4, 8-4 GNAC) also got 16 points from Maria Nilsson as they ran their overall win streak to five games and pulled within a game of Western Washington in the race for the league title.
SPU (15-7, 8-3), which fell out of first in the GNAC standings, was led by center Kelsey Hill's 17 points, while forward Rachel Strand had 12 rebounds. The Falcons had won 13 straight against the Seawolves, with UAA's last win coming in the 1999-00 season.
The game was also big in the race for the NCAA Div. II West Region playoffs as the Seawolves entered at No. 4 in the regional rankings and SPU at No. 3.
UAA senior Jayci Stone had 10 rebounds, three assists and a career-best four steals, but it was her three-pointer with 2:54 remaining that snapped a 56-56 tie and gave her team the lead for good.
The Seawolves also got nine points and five assists from guard Jennifer Salazar, while Tristan Burnett scored all nine of her points in the second half to help UAA back from a 39-32 halftime deficit.
The Falcons forged their lead by shooting 8 of 14 from three-point range in the first half, but their hot hands would cool in the second 20 minutes, going just 2 of 14. UAA held SPU to just 17 percent (5 of 29) shooting in the second half, including just one field goal in the final 8:50.
That shot was a three-point bucket by Jackie Hollands that made it 63-61 with 10 seconds to go, and the Falcons earned a shot at the tie when Stone managed just one of two free throws. But Hollands missed her ensuing try and the Falcons could not get another trey off before the buzzer.
UAA, now 13-0 on its home courts in 2006-07, returns to the WFSC to take on Central Washington on Saturday at 5 p.m.
