Arts, Olsen power Seawolves past Vikings

ANCHORAGE – Carl Arts had 25 points and 12 rebounds and McCade Olsen tossed in 23 points as the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team pulled away for a 77-61 victory over Western Washington in its final home game Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

UAA (17-7, 8-5 GNAC) also got 11 assists from point guard Luke Cooper – breaking the school single-season record – as it remained in the hunt for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and an NCAA Tournament berth.

WWU (9-13, 3-9) was led by guard Ira Graham's 16 points, but the Vikings couldn't avoid their seventh straight loss, the program's longest skid since 1982-83.

The Seawolves, ranked No. 5 in the Division II West Region, led 29-28 at halftime after shooting just 37 percent in the opening 20 minutes. UAA came out strong in the second half, however, starting with a 15-2 run to lead by double digits the rest of the way.

Arts (8-17 FG, 9-9 FT) came two points shy of his career-high as he tallied his fourth double-double of the season, while his rebound total was a season-best for the Seawolves.

Olsen, meanwhile, responded strongly in his first collegiate start, shooting 10 of 15 from the floor and 3 of 4 on free throws.

Cooper finished with nine points, and seniors Eric Draper and Buddy Bailey contributed six apiece in their final home appearances. Bailey, who also drew a starting assignment, dished five assists as well.

Cooper's final assist gave him 201 for the season, breaking record of current Seawolf radio analyst Bryan Anderson, whose mark of 200 had stood since 1993-94. Cooper ranks second in Div. II with 8.3 assists per game.

The win gave UAA its first season sweep of the Vikings since 2002-03.

UAA must hit the road for its final three regular-season games, beginning Thursday, Feb. 22 at Central Washington (6:30 p.m. AST).
