ANCHORAGE – Junior Maria Nilsson led a record-breaking three-point barrage Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team cruised to an 85-59 win over Saint Martin's at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Nilsson tied the school record with eight treys for the Seawolves (16-4, 5-4 GNAC), who also broke the 11-year-old record team mark with 14 total threes. Sophomore center Rebecca Kielpinski was big for the home team as well, coming up with 16 points, 13 rebounds and a season-high five assists.
Guard Jessi Reome led the Saints (5-15, 1-8) with 14 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting.
The Seawolves sped to a 7-0 lead and never looked back as Nilsson canned 7 of 8 from long range in the first 20 minutes. UAA took a 51-28 lead into the break and pushed its advantage as high as 82-42 with 5 minutes to play.
Senior guard Jayci Stone – who set the UAA and tied the GNAC individual record with eight threes last week at Alaska Fairbanks – was the second half of the Seawolves' three-point knockout combo, going 5 of 10 beyond the arc for 17 points.
The old single-game team school record was 13 three-pointers on Feb. 11, 1995 in Fairbanks.
UAA outrebounded the Saints 47-33 and shot a season-high 49.2 percent from the field.
Next up for the Seawolves is their second-to-last road trip of the season, Feb. 8 at Western Washington and Feb. 10 at Seattle University.
