No. 12 Tritons trip Seawolves in West semis

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Jayci Stone scored a game-high 20 points but the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team's impressive season came to a halt Saturday as the Seawolves lost 66-51 to host UC San Diego in the NCAA Div. II West Regional semifinals at RIMAC Arena.

The 4th-seeded Seawolves (23-6) couldn't overcome a big early deficit, shooting just 30 percent for the game and getting outrebounded 42-36.

Meanwhile, the top-seeded and 12th-ranked Tritons (25-4) got 18 points and 12 rebounds from forward Hillary Hansen to advance to Monday's regional final, where they will face defending region champ Chico State.

The Seawolves held two-time West Region MVP Leora Juster to only 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting, however the rest of the Tritons were spot-on, hitting five of their first six three-point tries to pull out to a 35-17 halftime lead.

Despite playing solid defense, the Seawolves were unable to cut into the deficit early in the second half as it ballooned to 57-26 with 7 minutes to play.

Stone (7-18 FG, 5-14 3FG, 7 reb, 3 asst, 2 steals in 40 minutes) got hot from three-point range late, though, and Mari Callahan drilled a pair of treys in the final minutes to make the final score more respectable against the UCSD reserves.

The only bright spots in Saturday's loss came as Stone and Kielpinski (8 pts, 11 reb) set a pair of UAA single-season records. Kielpinski got her 63rd block of the year, eclipsing Dana Bottoms' mark of 62 from 2000-01, and Stone sank her 76th three-pointer to move past Tanya Nizich's 73 treys from 2003-04.

Callahan – one of four seniors playing her last game for UAA – finished with eight points (2-3 3FG) and freshman point guard Keyona Brooks had seven points and three assists.

The Seawolves end their season one win shy of the school record of 24, set in 1987-88, as they fell to 3-7 all-time in NCAA Tournament action.
