UAA stifles Saints to run winning streak to 9

LACEY, Wash. ? Senior forward Carl Arts scored 19 points and the Seawolf men's basketball team set a new Great Northwest Athletic Conference defensive standard with a 66-42 win over Saint Martin's at SMU Pavilion on Saturday.

UAA (11-3, 2-0 GNAC) ran its winning streak to nine games overall as McCade Olsen and Chris Bryant chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively. The Saints (6-5, 1-1), meanwhile, were held to the fewest points ever in a GNAC game, breaking the record of 46 allowed by Seattle Pacific against SMU on Dec. 8, 2001, the league's first year of competition.

Tyler Nixon led the home team with just seven points on 2-of-7 shooting, while UAA point guard Luke Cooper (6 points, 7 assists) held SMU leading scorer Jake Linton 14 points under his season average of 19. Linton had entered as the third-leading scorer in the GNAC.

The Seawolves took a 3-2 lead on their first offensive possession, getting a trey from Bryant (5-8 FG, 1-2 3FG), and never trailed. UAA led 34-16 at halftime and stretched the advantage as high as 27 twice in the last 10 minutes.

Olsen shot 6 of 10 with six rebounds, and Arts sank 8 of 13 with a game-high seven boards. Starting forward Cameron Burney had another quietly solid outing with six points (3-5 FG), six rebounds and three assists.

UAA shot 54.9 percent, topping the 50 percent barrier for the fourth time in the last five games. Freshman Kevin White scored six of UAA's nine bench points, hitting 2 of 3 from three-point range.

The Seawolves have now equaled the third-longest winning streak in school history, having last won nine in a row in the 1996-97 season. The 1981-82 squad won 11 straight, and the 1985-86 team holds the record with 14 consecutive victories.
