Seawolves slip up in narrow loss to 'Jackets

BILLINGS, Mont. ? Rhea Cardwell and Rachel Kidwell both posted 15 kills but it wasn't enough to save the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team from a disheartening loss as host Montana State Billings prevailed 18-15, 25-18, 26-24, 25-22 at Alterowitz Gymnasium on Monday night.

The Seawolves (11-8, 3-3 GNAC) were hurt by 25 attack errors and were unable to capitalize on late leads in the third and fourth sets.

MSUB (5-15, 2-5), meanwhile, won its second straight thanks to 17 kills and 12 digs from Devon Crotteau and 14 kills by Jennifer Boe.

After splitting the first two sets, UAA seemed on the verge of taking a 2-1 advantage with a 24-22 lead in the third. But a Crotteau kill changed the momentum as the Yellowjackets scored the final four points and grabbed the set.

In the fourth, UAA found itself with a 22-17 lead before allowing MSUB to run off the last eight straight points of the match.

Setter Calli Scott dished 42 assists for UAA, but Cardwell and Kidwell were the only Seawolves to post double-digits in either kills or digs. Both players had double-doubles, with Cardwell making 13 digs and Kidwell 11 digs. Kidwell also equaled her career high with four service aces.

Things get no easier for the Seawolves, who return home to host nationally 3rd-ranked Western Washington on Thursday and GNAC contender Central Washington on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
