LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. ? Rebecca Kielpinski scored 10 points and fellow senior Dasha Basova nailed a clutch three-pointer to lift the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 46-43 victory over Bentley at Disney's East Coast Division II Classic on Saturday at The Milk House.
UAA (2-0) also got a game-high 11 rebounds from forward Nicci Miller as they prevailed in a defensive battle for the second straight day.
Bentley (0-2) got eight points apiece from Shatasia Kearse and Elise Caira, but UAA held the Falcons to just 23.6 percent shooting (13 of 55) and outrebounded them 45-36.
The Seawolves, ranked No. 5 in the preseason by Women's Division II Bulletin, took an early 8-0 lead and appeared on their way to an easy victory. But the Falcons had other ideas, fighting back for a 24-24 draw at the half.
UAA led 34-29 when Kielpinski (3-5 FG, 4-5 FT) nailed a pair of free throws with 14:22 remaining. The Seawolves would not score again for over nine minutes, however, as the Waltham, Mass., squad pulled ahead, 39-34.
Kielpinski ended the draught with a traditional three-point play and tied it with another layup two minutes later. After a pair of missed opportunities by Bentley, Basova took a pass from Jackie Thiel and buried the go-ahead three-pointer with 2:15 remaining.
The Falcons ? picked to finish third in the 15-team Northeast-10 Conference ? twice sliced their deficit to one before Miller converted a layup with 55 seconds left for the final scoring. UAA dodged several more bullets in the final minute as Bentley missed two free throws and two field-goal tries, including a three-pointer by Angela Manfredi with three seconds to go.
Basova, a 6-3 forward from Moscow, Russia, finished with seven points (3-5 FG, 1-3 3FG) and five rebounds.
The Seawolves overcame 34 team turnovers to secure Saturday's win.
UAA will finish its Disney trip Sunday when it faces Lake Superior State (2-0) at 10:30 a.m. AST.
