Spikers sneak past 'Jackets on Senior Night

ANCHORAGE ? Outside hitter Rhea Cardwell blasted 24 kills in her final home match and sophomore Cortney Lundberg came up clutch in the final set Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team earned a 25-21, 20-25, 24-26, 25-15, 15-9 victory over Montana State Billings at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

UAA (14-13, 6-8 GNAC) got double-doubles from Cardwell and fellow seniors Rachel Kidwell and Joanna Johnson, plus a match-high18 digs from libero Stacie Meisner.

Outside hitter Devon Crotteau led MSUB (6-23, 3-12) with 16 kills and 14 digs.

The Seawolves earned a split of the season series thanks to dominating play in the final two sets, hitting .375 and .267, respectively, in those frames.

No one was hotter down the stretch than Lundberg, who slammed five of her 11 kills in the fifth set, including the final two points. The middle blocker from Hardin, Mont., also haunted her home-state opponent with six total blocks.

Junior setter Calli Scott dished 56 assists, setting up the offense for Cardwell (24 kills, 17 digs), Kidwell (17 kills, 15 digs, 3 aces) and Johnson (13 kills, 17 digs, 4 block assists).

It was the final home match for five seniors in all, as middle blocker Jessica Morehouse collected five blocks assists and defensive specialist Cristal Negron finished with one dig.

The Seawolves conclude their season next week with road matches against Central Washington (Thur., Nov. 13, 6 p.m. AST) and nationally ranked Western Washington (Sat., Nov. 15, 1 p.m. AST).
