Seawolves settle for 2-2 tie with Mavs

ANCHORAGE ? The Seawolf hockey team dominated virtually every statistical category in its Saturday night WCHA encounter with Minnesota State at Sullivan Arena. And yet, in the end, Alaska Anchorage had to settle for a 2-2 tie with the No. 13-ranked Mavericks. UAA is now 5-3-2 overall and 2-2-2 in WCHA play while MSU moved to 4-2-2 and 2-2-2.

The Seawolves outshot the Mavericks by a commanding 33-14 margin and took just three minor penalties on the night ? a recipe for success on most nights. But MSU senior goalie Mike Zacharias came up big for the Mavericks in helping them steal a point in league standings.

Minnesota State jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Mike Louwerse and Mick Berge ? those two goals coming on just four shots in the frame.

The Seawolves' Josh Lunden scored on the power play at 1:30 of the second period on assists from Curtis Leinweber and Brian Bales to make it 2-1. And then junior center Paul Crowder tied it at 2-2 at 8:49 of the third on an assist from Leinweber.

UAA outshot the Mavericks 25-10 over the game's final two regulation periods and overtime, but  MSU's Zacharias made it stand up.
Meanwhile UAA sophomore Bryce Christianson was steady in goal for the Seawolves with 12 saves and remained unbeaten on the season at 3-0-2.

MSU was 1-for-3 on the power play while UAA went 1-for-6.

The Seawolves will travel to Grand Forks next weekend to take on the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota.
