Seawolf offense clicks in rout of Mansfield

ANCHORAGE ? Nicci Miller had 16 points and 10 rebounds as the nationally 4th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team rolled to a 89-43 victory over Mansfield at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Monday night.

The Seawolves (9-1) got solid performances up and down the lineup to post their seventh straight win and their second over the Mountaineers (3-4) in as many nights.

Junior guard Tamar Gruwell and senior forward Dasha Basova scored 14 points apiece for UAA, while freshman Hanna Johansson tallied 10 points (5-8 FG) for the second straight game.

Mansfield starting guard Courtney Brooks paced her team in scoring with 11 points, but the visitors from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference managed to shoot only 21.8 percent from the floor.

After being tied 5-5, UAA got a fast-break layup from Rebecca Kielpinski to start a 13-0 run, and the lead quickly ballooned to 39-9 at the 5:34 mark of the first half. Basova scored 12 of her points in the opening stanza as UAA built its third-largest halftime lead ever against a Division II opponent, 47-16.

Miller, a junior forward from Denver, did most of her damage in the second half to record her first double-double as a Seawolf. She also added three steals and doubled her season total with three assists.

Gruwell, a JC transfer from Sierra (Calif.) College, also had her best all-around outing at UAA with season-highs of six assists, four steals and four rebounds.

As a team, UAA posted season-highs for points scored, three-pointers made (11), assists (25), steals (19) and blocks (6).

Kielpinski pulled down seven rebounds and had two blocks, while senior guard Elisha Harris contributed nine points, five rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Tristan Burnett tallied eight points, three assists and three steals ? all season-highs for the Portland, Ore., native.

UAA returns to action Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (5:15 p.m.), Dec. 19 and 20, when it hosts West Region foe Cal State Stanislaus at the WFSC.
