Harris sparks 'Wolves to win over Nanooks

ANCHORAGE ? Maria Nilsson led a balanced scoring effort with 14 points as the 11th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team earned its fourth straight win with a 68-54 decision over rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex on Saturday.

The Seawolves (23-3, 12-2 GNAC) also got a 13-point, 11-rebound effort from Rebecca Kielpinski and a career-high 13 points from guard Elisha Harris as they swept the season series from the Nanooks.

UAF (9-13, 2-12) was led by 15 points from senior Kari Reabold and 12 points from junior guard Sheena Brown, but the Nanooks were held to just 33 percent shooting as they lost for the fifth straight time.

Just as they did last month in Fairbanks, the Seawolves jumped to a huge first-half lead, going up 38-18 before Brown ended the period with a three-pointer.

Harris, who equaled her previous career-high with 11 points in the opening 20 minutes, was the sparkplug. The junior from West Jordan, Utah, also finished with four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals in just her third career start.

Senior guard Kalhie Quinones had 11 points, four rebounds and four assists, while junior forward Ruby Williams came up with nine points and eight boards.

UAF made a valiant run in the second half, but Nilsson seemed to put an end to each Nanook charge with a three-pointer. The Swede shot 4 of 10 from long range on the night and now has 115 career treys, breaking Tirzah Church's record (113, 1998-00) for the most by a UAA 2-year transfer.

Kielpinski's double-double was her eighth of the season and extended her school record to 37 in that category.

The Seawolves, ranked No. 4 in the all-important West Region poll that determines playoff position, are back in action next week whey they host Central Washington (Thur., Feb. 28) and Western Washington (Sat., Mar. 1). Both games tip at 7 p.m. at the WFSC.
