UAA men stop Nanooks for 17th straight win

FAIRBANKS ? McCade Olsen and Carl Arts combined for 36 points and 13 rebounds Saturday as the 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team ran its winning streak to 17 games with a 67-53 victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (19-3, 10-0 GNAC) also got 10 points from senior guard Chris Bryant as they outshot the hosts 52 percent to 35 percent. UAA also won the rebounding battle 33-28, led by seven from Arts.

The Nanooks (4-15, 1-9) got a game-high 25 points from forward Mladen Begojevic, who nailed 6 of 8 from three-point range.

UAA made only two three-pointers on the night, but the Seawolves outscored the Nanooks 21-6 from the free throw line. Olsen made all nine of his charities on the way to 19 points (5-8 FG), while Arts had 17 points on 7-of-9 field-goal shooting.

In addition to extending its school and Great Northwest Athletic Conference record for consecutive overall wins, UAA also established a new school mark for the most consecutive road victories at eight.

The Seawolves, ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Div. II West Region poll, face a pair of critical road games next week as they take on Western Washington (Thur., Feb. 14, 6 p.m. AST) and Central Washington (Sat., Feb. 16, 6 p.m. AST). CWU is currently ranked No. 10 in the West but should move up after a pair of victories this week. The Wildcats are also in second place in the league standings, two and a half games behind UAA.
