Nanooks trip Seawolves in Fairbanks, 3-2

FAIRBANKS ? Senior Rhea Cardwell blasted a career-high 26 kills but the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team couldn't pull out a tight fifth set as arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks scored a 25-22, 13-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13 win over the Seawolves at the Patty Center on Saturday.

The Seawolves (10-6, 2-1 GNAC) suffered their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference loss despite outhitting the Nanooks .156 to .121.

UAF (9-4, 3-1) was led by 10 kills apiece from Megan Thigpen and Heather Lyons.

Cardwell, who led UAA in kills for the 12th straight match, also had 12 digs to register her seventh double-double of the season. Libero Stacie Meisner had match-highs of 19 digs and three aces, while senior Joanna Johnson managed seven kills and 16 digs for UAA.

The Seawolves return to the road next week for three matches, beginning Thursday, Oct. 2 in Lacey, Wash., when they face Saint Martin's in another GNAC showdown.
