PHOENIX ? The Alaska Anchorage volleyball team fought swing-for-swing with the No. 8-ranked NAIA team in the nation but it wasn't quite enough Friday night as Point Loma (Calif.) Nazarene downed the Seawolves 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 at the Cactus Classic at Antelope Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (5-2) saw their five-match winning streak snapped despite 10 kills and 11 blocks from sophomore Cortney Lundberg, plus 14 kills from senior Rhea Cardwell.
PLNU (6-0) was just slightly sharper than UAA in the overall statistics, winning the hitting battle .192 to .152 and the digs battle 65-59. Zoe Beltz provided the bulk of the Crusader offensive with 15 kills on .464 hitting.
The Seawolves also got double-digit kills from Rachel Kidwell (11), while setter and Phoenix native Calli Scott had 41 assists and 12 digs.
UAA returns to action Saturday when it takes on host Grand Canyon (2-3) at 9 a.m. ADT. The Seawolves finish their Cactus Classic experience later that day in a rematch with Western State (Colo.), who the Seawolves swept earlier Friday.
