Senior duo leads UAA men to road blowout of UAF

FAIRBANKS ? Kenny Barker scored 21 points and fellow senior Jeremiah Trueman added 20 Wednesday as the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team rolled to an 81-52 win over arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (8-8, 2-1 GNAC) dominated from the opening tip, holding the Nanooks (4-8, 1-2) without a field goal for the opening 7 minutes, 30 seconds and building a 45-18 halftime advantage.

UAF was led by 11 points apiece from guard Emmanuel Jenkins and forward Nashorn Maynard.

UAA was efficient on offense all night, shooting 55.2 percent from the floor, boosted by sophomore guards Brandon Walker (13 pts) and Lonnie Ridgeway (12 pts).

Junior point guard Darren Nye had another good game as well, tallying 10 points, a career-high eight rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Seawolves outshone the Nanooks in nearly every team category, posting especially impressive edges in rebounds (40-30), assists (19-6), field-goal shooting (55.2 percent to 29.8 percent) and three-point shooting (38.9 percent to 10.5 percent).

Trueman ? who did not start for the second consecutive game because of a twisted ankle ? still managed to have one of the best games of his career, shooting 9 of 11, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing four assists without a turnover.

Barker, meanwhile, scored 15 of his points in the opening stanza as the former UAF star finished 9 of 16 from the floor with seven rebounds and three assists.

UAA also committed a season-low 10 turnovers as it won for the eighth time in 11 outings after starting the year 0-5.

The win was UAA's third straight over the Nanooks in Fairbanks and their sixth straight overall against their arch rivals.

The Seawolves have a full week off before returning to the road Jan. 22 at Western Oregon.
