Seawolf men fall short at Saint Martin's

LACEY, Wash. ? Kenny Barker scored 20 points and fellow senior Jeremiah Trueman added 16 points Saturday but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball had its comeback fall just short, losing 66-62 to Saint Martin's at Marcus Pavilion.

UAA (9-9, 3-2 GNAC) had its three-game winning streak snapped and lost on the road for the first time in three games thus far.

SMU (14-5, 2-3) was led by 18 points from center Bill Richardson and 17 points from point guard Jake Linton to win its second straight after three consecutive losses.

The teams exchanged leads five times in the first half and went to the locker room tied 29-29.

UAA took a brief 35-31 edge on a jumper by Barker (7-14 FG, 6-7 FT) with 18 minutes left, but the Saints responded with a 10-2 run to take the lead for good.

SMU pushed its advantage to 55-44 with 7:35 remaining before Brandon Walker began a Seawolf comeback attempt with a three-pointer.

A layup by Trueman (7-9 FG) sliced the deficit to 60-57 at the 2:20 mark, and the Seawolves crept within a point, 62-61, on a pair of Darren Nye free throws with 18 seconds left.

The Saints then successfully got the inbounds pass to Linton ? the leading scorer and free-throw shooter in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference ? who sank both of his charities.

But on the ensuing possession the Saints were able to foul UAA's Kevin White with 3 seconds left, thereby preventing a potential game-tying three-pointer. White made the first shot and purposefully missed the second, but Trueman was called for a foul on the rebound scramble.

SMU's Blake Poole clinched then clinched it with two free throws for the final margin.

Barker's scoring performance marked his fifth straight game with 20 or more. The senior from San Diego also led UAA with seven rebounds while playing the full 40 minutes.

The Seawolves complete their four-game road swing Wednesday when they travel to upstart Montana State Billings for a 5 p.m. AST tip.
