Records fall in Seawolf romp

ANCHORAGE ? The Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team set three school records and tied three more Saturday in an 80-23 rout of visiting Kuyper College at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (13-1) won their 11th in a row as senior guard Jackie Thiel led the way with 24 points.

Junior forward Nicci Miller had 14 points (6-10 FG, 2-3 3FG) and a game-high eight rebounds for the Seawolves, who broke single-game team records for blocks (13) and three-pointers attempted (40).

UAA tied the school record with 14 three-pointers made, while Thiel canned 8 of 10 from long range to tie individual treys-made mark held by recent stars Jayci Stone and Maria Nilsson.

Thiel's 80 percent three-point marksmanship was also the best ever for a Seawolf attempting 10 or more in a game.

The Cougars (2-14), of Grand Rapids, Mich., were led by 11 points from guard Emily Wittenbach. Kuyper plays in the National Christian College Athletic Association while UAA is the 3rd-ranked NCAA Div. II team in the nation.

Junior guard Tristan Burnett scored all of her season-high 11 points in the first half as UAA built a 42-7 lead at the break. The seven points marked UAA's third-lowest total ever allowed in a half.

Sophomore center Viki Wohlers came off the bench to tally six points (3-4 FG) and a UAA season-high five blocks, and junior Danielle Dekel dished four assists and grabbed five rebounds in just nine minutes.

Senior center Rebecca Kielpinski had six points, three blocks and four rebounds, leaving the All-American just four rebounds shy of 1,000 for her career. The Mandan, N.D., native did match another school record, however, as she emerged victorious for the 79th time in a Seawolf uniform. That ties the record of Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Robin Graul (1985-89) and Diane Dobrich (1986-90).

UAA's 11-game winning streak is now the third-longest in program history, while Saturday's victory increased its home-court win streak to 15.

The Seawolves begin Great Northwest Athletic Conference play when they visit Saint Martin's on Thursday, Jan. 8 (6 pm AST) in Lacey, Wash.
