Seawolves sweep Nanooks up north

FAIRBANKS - Sophomore Jackie Matthisen had 16 kills and senior Calli Scott lifted 32 assists Saturday night as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team earned a key Great Northwest Athletic Conference road win with a 25-21, 25-21, 25-21 sweep of arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.

With the victory, the Seawolves (13-7, 5-2 GNAC) move into sole possession of second place in the nine-team league, just one match behind league leader Seattle Pacific. That sets up a showdown for first place when UAA travels to Seattle on Thursday in the next match for both clubs.

UAA also got nine kills from junior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg and eight kills from sophomore outside hitter McKenzie Moss to recover from 4-point deficits midway through the first and third sets.

UAF (8-9, 2-4) was led by 14 kills from middle blocker Jessica Hill, plus 11 kills and 10 digs from outside hitter Megan Thigpen.

Senior libero Stacie Meisner made a team-high 10 digs for UAA, while senior middle blocker Ashley Bates tied for match-high honors with four total blocks.

The victory snapped a 5-game overall losing streak against the Nanooks, including three straight in Fairbanks.
