No. 3 Wolverines stop Seawolf skaters

ANCHORAGE - Matt Rust scored a goal and added a pair of assists as 3rd-ranked Michigan skated to a 6-1 victory over host Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night to close out the Kendall Hockey Classic at Sullivan Arena.

The Wolverines (1-1-0) placed second in the tournament by virtue of their victory, while the Seawolves (1-1-0) finished third.

UAA got its lone goal from senior forward Kevin Clark, but the visitors from Ann Arbor had already established a 5-goal lead when that second-period strike occurred.

The Wolverines took control early with a goal by Ben Winnet just 1:39 into the action. Michigan would claim a 3-0 advantage before the first break on tallies by Brian Lebler and Carl Hagelin.

Rust assisted on his team's third and fourth goals before notching a goal of its own at 12:56 of the second period, making it 5-0.

Clark put UAA on the board with 18 seconds left in the second, converting a pass from defenseman Luka Vidmar to earn his 29th career goal and first of the season.

Bryan Hogan made 15 saves to earn the win in goal for UM, which handed UAA its worst loss in its own tournament. Combined with Friday's win over Mercyhurst, the Seawolves are now 19-14-7 in 17 Classics.

The Seawolves next travel to Fairbanks, where they will face RPI and Robert Morris as they attempt to defend their title in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush, Oct. 16-17.
