Seawolves stuff Crusaders in Nampa

NAMPA, Idaho – Jackie Matthisen and Cortney Lundberg combined for 27 of Alaska Anchorage's 44 kills Saturday as the Seawolf volleyball team registered its fifth straight victory – all sweeps – 25-22, 25-17, 25-16 over Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.

The win keeps the Seawolves (15-7, 7-2 GNAC) tied for first place with Seattle Pacific in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings and knocks the Crusaders (13-9, 6-4) one and a half matches out.

Setter Calli Scott had another efficient outing with 33 assists and 11 digs, helping the regionally 7th-ranked Seawolves out-hit the 9th-ranked Crusaders, .286 to .073. UAA also won the blocking battle, 10-6, thanks to Lundberg, who had a career-high four solos among her six total stuffs.

NNU controlled the action at the outset, taking an 18-13 lead late in the first set. But a Seawolf timeout turned the momentum around as UAA won 10 of the next 12 points, allowing the only Crusader tallies on service errors.

Lundberg, a 6-1 junior middle blocker, slammed back-to-back kills midway through that big rally before giving UAA a 24-22 lead on a solo block. An attack error by NNU ended the first set, and the Seawolves pulled away at the mid-point of the second and third frames.

Matthisen, a sophomore outside hitter, continued her bid for postseason honors with 14 kills (.353 att%) and nine digs, while senior libero Stacie Meisner lifted an impressive 18 digs in the short affair.

NNU got eight kills from Lindsay Grant and seven from Cammy Dranginis, but no other Crusader managed more than four. UAA also outdug the Crusaders – who entered the match with an NCAA-best 19.42 digs per set – by a 52-48 count.

The win was UAA's first in Nampa since 2001, the GNAC's inaugural season.

The Seawolves – picked to finish seventh in the GNAC preseason coaches' poll – have now matched their overall and league win totals from last year as well.

UAA now gets five of its last seven matches at home, beginning Thursday, Oct. 22, against Central Washington.
