Matthisen, Seawolves blast Wolves, 3-0

ANCHORAGE – Sophomore Jackie Matthisen dominated offensively against her former team with match-highs of 20 kills and three aces Thursday as Alaska Anchorage blanked Western Oregon, 25-20, 25-21, 25-20, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball showdown at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Matthisen was the only player with double-figure kills on the night, while senior setter Calli Scott collected 35 assists and three block assists for the Seawolves (11-7, 3-2 GNAC).

WOU (5-11, 2-3) got eight kills apiece from Danielle Reese and Sylvia Herrold, but the defending league champion Wolves were out-hit .299 to .190.

The Seawolves also got nice performances from junior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg (8 kills, .333 att%, 4 total blocks) and sophomore outside hitter McKenzie Moss (8 kills, 8 digs, 2 aces) as they snapped an eight-match losing streak against the visitors from Monmouth, Ore.

Senior libero Stacie Meisner lifted a match-high 10 digs for UAA, and middle blockers Ashley Bates and Marie Borowikow contributed four kills apiece.

But it was Matthisen – an Anchorage native who played her freshman season of 2007 at WOU – who came back to haunt her old squad, notching seven kills in each of the first two frames and finishing with a .371 hitting percentage (20 kills-7 errors-35 attacks). Her kills total was two more than any GNAC player has registered in a 3-set match this year.

The Seawolves return to the WFSC on Saturday when they host Saint Martin's in another GNAC contest at 7 p.m. ADT.
