Seawolves win 6th straight, 3-1 over CWU

ANCHORAGE – Sophomore outside hitter Jackie Matthisen had 19 kills and 16 digs Thursday as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team used solid performances throughout its lineup to earn a sixth straight victory, 25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, over Central Washington at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (16-7, 8-2) maintain a share of first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with the win and swept the season series from the Wildcats (12-9, 4-6) for the second straight season.

Outside hitter Erin Norris led CWU with 15 kills as the visitors had their three-match winning streak halted.

UAA junior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg equaled her career-high and established the best mark by a GNAC player this year with 11 total blocks, helping the hosts to a season-best 15 stuffs.

Meanwhile, senior setter Calli Scott was at her best with 51 assists – the most in a 4-setter by a GNAC player in 2009 – nine digs, five block assists and five kills on .333 hitting. The Arizona native ran a Seawolf offense that out-hit the Wildcats .251 to .151 and produced double-digit kills totals from Matthisen, sophomore outside hitter McKenzie Moss (17), freshman outside hitter Marie Borowikow (11) and Lundberg (11).

Moss powered the Seawolves in the early going, hitting .600 in the first two sets. Trailing 21-17 in the second frame, it was the Bartlett High product's kill that began an 8-0, set-ending run for the Seawolves.

Despite taking a 21-19 lead late in the third set, the Seawolves' bid to tie the school record for consecutive sets won (18, Oct. 11-27, 2001) came up just short, falling by the minimum two points.

In the fourth, Matthisen shook off what had been a tough night individually to that point, delivering seven kills on .353 hitting in the clinching set. The East Anchorage High grad came two digs shy of equaling her career-high in that category, while her kills total was her 14th straight match in double digits.

Thursday was also a banner night for a pair of Seawolf freshman defenders, with Nikkie Viotto (12) and Shelby Hollister (8) both recording personal-bests in digs.

The Seawolves next face a huge showdown Saturday (7 p.m.) when they host Western Washington (15-7, 8-3), which sits just one-half match behind UAA and Seattle Pacific in the battle for first place.
