Spikers conquer Vikings, sit atop GNAC

ANCHORAGE – Sophomore outside hitters Jackie Matthisen and McKenzie Moss each notched double-doubles Saturday as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team roared back from a shaky start to claim a 8-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-9 victory over Western Washington at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Senior setter Calli Scott had 41 assists and five kills for the regionally 7th-ranked Seawolves (17-7, 9-2 GNAC), who won their seventh straight match and moved into sole possession of first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

Outside hitter Marlayna Geary had five of her team-high 13 kills in the first set for the Vikings, who were swept in the season series for the first time against UAA.

Despite getting dominated in the opening set, the Seawolves were able to recover from an early 4-1 deficit in the second and turn the match upside down. Moss and Matthisen accounted for five kills and five digs apiece on that set, while junior Cortney Lundberg – the GNAC's blocking leader – had four of her eight total blocks.

UAA continued to roll in the third when freshman outside hitter Marie Borowikow tallied half of her 10 kills, and the fourth set became a mirror image of the first, with the Seawolves out-hitting the Vikings .407 to -.065 in the frame.

The home team won the overall hitting battle .223 to .119 and out-dug the visitors from Bellingham 60-47.

Individually, Matthisen registered 15 kills and 16 digs, while Moss had 11 kills, 12 digs and a pair of aces. Senior libero Stacie Meisner was solid on the back row as usual, earning 14 digs and three assists.

The Seawolves, who were picked preseason to finish seventh in the nine-team league, now lead idle Seattle Pacific by one-half match, while WWU falls 1.5 matches behind.

UAA embarks on its final regular-season road trip this week when it travels to Western Oregon and Saint Martin's for matches Oct. 29 and 31.
