Lundberg lifts Seawolves to sweep

ANCHORAGE – Powered by virtually unstoppable hitting from junior Cortney Lundberg, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team rolled to a 25-18, 25-21, 25-16 victory over Saint Martin's on Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

UAA (12-7, 4-2 GNAC) won its second straight match as Lundberg made school history with 17 kills on only 19 attacks for an amazing .895 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Jackie Matthisen picked up her fifth double-double of the year with 12 kills and 11 digs, while libero Stacie Meisner lifted 21 digs in the short affair.

SMU (1-12, 0-6) was led by eight kills apiece from Teilissa Tua and Kirstyn Druzianich as the visitors from Lacey, Wash., fell to the Seawolves for the third straight time.

Much of Lundberg's success came thanks to picture-perfect sets from senior Calli Scott, who finished with 37 assists and helped the Seawolves hit .313 on the night.

A 6-1 middle blocker from Hardin, Mont., Lundberg kept getting better as the night wore on. In the first set she connected for four kills on five tries, before helping UAA come back from an early deficit in the second with six kills on seven swings. She then finished with a perfect 7-of-7 showing in the final frame.

Lundberg's .895 performance now ranks second all-time at UAA (Janelle Veith, .909 [10-0-11] vs Seattle, Oct. 20, 2001) and establishes a new mark for 12-plus attempts, besting the previous record (April Hydak, .786 [11-0-14] vs Western New Mexico, Oct. 28, 1997) by more than 100 percentage points.

Lundberg's previous career-high was .733 (11-0-15), set last season in another 3-set home win over the Saints.

With the victory, UAA moves into a three-way tie for second place at the one-third mark of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule. The Seawolves stand just one-half match back of first-place Seattle Pacific, which was upset at home Saturday, 3-2, by Montana State Billings.

The Seawolves now have their longest layoff of the season – six days – before traveling north Oct. 10 for a showdown with rival Alaska Fairbanks.
