Seawolves stop Saints, win 9th straight

LACEY, Wash. - Senior setter Calli Scott dished 35 assists and sophomore outside hitter Jackie Matthisen smashed 15 kills Saturday to lead the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its ninth straight victory with a 26-24, 25-19, 25-19 win over Saint Martin's and Marcus Pavilion.

Sophomore McKenzie Moss had her team-best 11th double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs for regionally 5th-ranked UAA (19-7, 11-2 GNAC), which maintained its Great Northwest Athletic Conference lead at 1.5 matches over Seattle Pacific.

The Saints (3-19, 0-13) were led by senior Kristin Anderson with nine kills and five digs.

UAA started slow out of the gate and had to come back from 20-18 and 23-22 deficits late in the first set against SMU, which is still looking for its first win over a fellow Div. II club this year. Freshman Nikkie Viotto (7 digs, 2 assists) banged her only kill of the night to put UAA up 25-24 and Matthisen clinched the opening frame with another kill, both on assists from Scott.

The Seawolves then pulled away from tie scores midway through the second and third sets to complete their second consecutive season sweep of SMU.

Senior libero Stacie Meisner made a match-high 18 digs for UAA, while Matthisen registered a double-double with 13 digs as well. Junior Cortney Lundberg tallied five kills and four total blocks, and freshman Marie Borowikow also had five kills.

UAA's 11th conference win ties a school record and assures the program of its best league winning percentage since 1988 (.875, 7-1).

The Seawolves host arch-rival Alaska Fairbanks in their next match, a 7 p.m. start on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
