Seawolves swamp Chanticleers, 89-47

ANCHORAGE – Senior forward Nicci Miller scored a career-high 24 points Tuesday night to lead the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team into its fourth consecutive Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout championship game with an 89-47 blowout of Coastal Carolina at Sullivan Arena.

The Seawolves (3-0), ranked No. 8 in NCAA Div. II, also got 14 points and four steals from senior guard Tamar Gruwell as they easily notched their largest margin of victory against a Division I opponent.

The Chanticleers (2-2), making their first Shootout appearance, were led by 10 points from guard Sydnei Moss, but the Big South Conference squad missed its first 11 shots and fell behind 46-18 at halftime.

Miller got the scoring started off a nice inside feed from Nikki Aden (10 pts, 4 assists, 0 turnovers) as UAA jumped to an early 12-1 lead. With seven minutes left in the first half, Gruwell nailed one of her three three-pointers and followed quickly with a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 34-9.

Fellow starting senior guard Kiki Taylor helped run the visitors from Conway, S.C., ragged with 12 points (5-8 FG, 2-4 3FG), three assists and three steals, while junior forward Kelsie Gourdin added eight points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench.

UAA enjoyed its largest lead at 89-41 with 1:29 left in the game.

The Seawolves shot over 50 percent for the third straight game (33-61, .541), while holding their opponents under the 30 percent mark (15-52, .288) for the third straight time as well.

With their seventh straight Shootout win, the three-time defending champion Seawolves stretched their overall home-court winning streak to 24 games, including three at Sullivan.

UAA's previous largest margin over a D-I squad came in the first round of last year's shooting when it topped Cal State Northridge 72-44.

The Seawolves will face the winner of tonight's late first-round game between Cincinnati and Western Carolina at 5 p.m. AST on Wednesday.
