Seawolves conquer Colonels in Shootout

ANCHORAGE – Brandon Walker tallied game-highs of 21 points and six rebounds Thursday as Alaska Anchorage recorded its 50th all-time win over a Division I opponent, taking a 72-58 decision against Nicholls State in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.

The host Seawolves (3-1) also got 15 points from sophomore center Malcolm Campbell and 10 points from Drew Robinson as they shot an impressive 75 percent (9 of 12) from three-point range.

The Colonels (0-6) – the preseason favorite to win the Southland Conference – were led by 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from reserve guard Maurice Franklin.

UAA took control from the start, jumping to a 14-4 lead in the first six minutes. Seawolf forward Casey Robinson scored all eight of his points on perfect shooting (3-3 FG, 2-2 3FG) in the opening 20 minutes as the Seawolves built a 37-30 halftime edge.

Bryce Arnott's only bucket of the game – a three-pointer at the 13-minute mark – gave UAA its largest lead at 51-32, but the home team would go the next seven minutes without a field goal.

Foster took advantage of UAA's lull with seven straight points, slicing the deficit to 53-47 for the visitors from Thibadaux, La.

Nick Pacitti finally answered for UAA with a rebound follow of his own miss, and the lead stretched back to double digits, 60-49, on a trey by Drew Robinson with 4:52 to play.

The Seawolves shot a season-best 58.5 percent (24-41) from the field, while holding the Colonels to 43.6 percent (24-55). UAA senior guard Kevin White guarded NSU counterpart and fellow Australian Anatoly Bose closely throughout, holing the Colonels' leading scorer to six points – 13 under his average coming in.

With the win, UAA finishes pool play with a 1-1 record and will await its Saturday opponent (either Houston, Oklahoma or San Diego from Pool B), depending on the outcome of tonight or tomorrow's contests. NSU will take on Washington State (4-0 overall, 1-0 in Pool A) on Friday at 5 p.m. AST in its next game.

UAA improved to 30-65 all-time in its traditional All-Division I, Thanksgiving touney, and 50-130 against all D-I opponents. The Seawolves also defeated the Colonels in the 1980 Shootout.
