Sooners recover to knock off Colonels

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Cade Davis led six Sooners in double figures with 18 points Saturday to power 25th-ranked Oklahoma to an 81-60, comeback victory over Nicholls State for fifth place in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout at Sullivan Arena.

The Sooners (3-3) also got 15 points and 12 rebounds from center Tiny Gallon as they outshot the Colonels 60 percent to 39 percent, boosted by 13-of-23 three-point marksmanship.

Nicholls (0-8) was led by 14 points apiece from Dominic Friend and Fred Hunter, but the Southland Conference club could not hold onto a 48-41 lead with 17 minutes to play.

Davis – who also had two assists and four steals without a turnover – started the OU comeback with a pair of free throws, and Gallon threw down consecutive fast-break dunks to give their team a 50-48 lead at the 15-minute mark.

Nicholls State, which led by as many as eight points in the first half, had no answer for the big spurt as Steven Pledger's three-pointer stretched the score to 65-53 with 8:22 left.

Pledger shot 5 of 7 from the field (4-5 3FG), while point guard Tommy Mason-Griffin dished six assists. Only six Sooners attempted shots, with all six shooting better than 50 percent. OU sophomore guard Willie Warren, who had scored 55 points in the tournament's first two games, did not play Saturday due to illness.
