Seawolves stifle Nyack up north

FAIRBANKS – Senior Nicci Miller scored 22 points and the 6th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team used a dominating defensive effort Thursday to earn a 75-42 win over Nyack in a neutral-court game at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (5-0) also got 17 points from junior forward Kelsie Gourdin and 11 points and seven rebounds from sophomore center Hanna Johansson as they won by at least 30 points for the fourth time this year.

The Warriors (2-3) were led by 12 points from guard Vicky Sweet, but the New York squad lost for the second time this year to a top-10 club. Nyack dropped its season-opener against No. 2 Franklin Pierce.

Despite jumping to a 16-4 lead, the Seawolves were in for a spirited challenge from the Warriors. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference team capitalized on 0-for-12 three-point shooting by UAA in the first half, grabbing a 25-24 lead on Jasmine Minter's short jumper with 4:40 on the clock.

But that would be the Warriors' last field goal for nearly 18 minutes as UAA ended the period with an 8-1 spurt. After Minter started the second-half scoring with a free throw, Miller answered with two straight buckets and assisted on another by Nikki Aden (9 pts, 5 assists), stoking a run that would put the Seawolves ahead 48-27 at the first media timeout.

By the time Nyack's next field goal – a three-pointer by Sweet with 6:52 remaining – went down, the Seawolves led 66-34.

UAA offset its 38 percent shooting (4 of 28 from long range) with a massive 64-32 rebounding advantage. The 64 boards equaled the third-most ever by a Seawolf team and were the most since setting the record with 68 against Silver Lake on Nov. 22, 1991. The plus-32 rebounding margin equaled the fifth-biggest differential in program history.

Miller, a 5-9 forward from Denver, shot 10 of 17 overall, along with eight rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Gourdin, a transfer from Mesa State, also had an efficient offensive outing with 5-of-7 overall and 7-of-7 free-throw shooting.

Sweet was the only player to notch double-figure scoring for the Warriors as they were held 24 percent from the field and forced into 19 turnovers.

Nyack will next play Alaska Fairbanks in a Friday-night affair before taking on UAA again on Saturday at the Patty Center.
