#6 Seawolves grind out win over Nyack

FAIRBANKS – Senior forward Nicci Miller scored 17 of her 18 points in the second half Saturday to help the 6th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team overcome an upset bid by Nyack, 70-62, at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (6-0) also got 10 points and eight rebounds from sophomore Hanna Johansson in a game that went down to the final half-minute.

Nyack (3-4) became the first team to break the 50-point barrier against UAA this year, shooting 43 percent, including 6 of 19 from the three-point line. Starting guards Jasmine Minter and Kelsey McIntosh paced the Warriors with 13 points apiece.

After winning 75-42 over the same team two nights ago on the same court, the Seawolves earned 32-22 halftime advantage Saturday, despite 0-of-4 shooting by Miller.

But the Seawolves' leading scorer would step up her game in the second half as the New Yorkers mounted a serious challenge. Miller shot 6-of-11 after the break, including a cutting layup with 2 minutes remaining that made the score 61-56.

Following a fast-break layup by Nikki Aden, the Warriors responded with a three-pointer by Vicky Sweet to slice the advantage to 63-61 with 59 seconds to go. Aden made one of two free throws on the ensuing possession, and a tie was averted when Minter's three-point try sailed left with 41 seconds left.

Miller grabbed the rebound and made both free throws for a 66-61 lead before UAA sent Nyack's Bobbi Van Fleet to the charity stripe with 20 seconds showing. Van Fleet swished both of her shots to apparently make it a one-possession game, but the Warriors were called for a lane violation on the second attempt, and UAA closed out the game from the other free-throw line.

Aden, a junior from Portland, Ore., posted seven points and a career-high seven rebounds to help UAA overcome the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference club. Taylor equaled her career-high with five steals as the Seawolves made 17 swipes and forced 27 turnovers.

The Seawolves return to action next week when they host BYU-Hawaii and Grand Canyon in the inaugural AT&T Classic, Dec. 11-12 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Alaska Fairbanks will also be on hand to play BYUH and GCU in doubleheaders starting at 5 p.m. both nights.
