Defense helps UAA to a 2-2 overtime tie

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- Outstanding goaltending by sophomore Bryce Christianson kept the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves in the game as they battled to a 2-2 overtime tie with the No. 14 Minnesota Golden Gophers in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game on Friday night at Mariucci Arena.

Christianson posted a season-high 34 saves en route to the tie, giving him a 5-4-4 record after recording a .944 save percentage on the night.

The Golden Gophers were first to strike with a power play goal by junior Jay Barriball at 5:11 of the first period. Freshman Jordan Schroeder and captain Ryan Stoa picked up the assists.

The Seawolves trailed by one through the remaining minutes of the first and the majority of the second period until sophomore Nick Haddad tallied his second goal of the season. Haddad received the puck from freshman Curtis Leinweber and junior Trevor Hunt, and sent the puck by Minnesota's goaltender, Alex Kangas, with less than two seconds to go in the period.

Within a minute of the start of the third period the Gophers took the lead again with a even strength goal by Schroeder. Schroeder, the nation's leader in points for all rookies, was able to put one past Christianson for the 2-1 lead.

UAA once again responded with a power play goal from junior Paul Crowder at 5:53 of the third. Crowder posted his 10th goal of the season, sending the game into overtime. Junior Kevin Clark and senior Mat Robinson were credited with the assists.

The Seawolves trailed the Gophers, 13-3 in shots on net in the first period before coming back in the second with a 12-8 advantage. The Gophers added six more shots than the Seawolves in the third for a 36-26 final tally.

Kangas split the tie with Christianson for a 12-9-6 record after saving 24 shots.

UAA held UW, the league leading team in power plays to one man-advantage goal out of five opportunities. The Seawolves also went 1-for-5 on the power play after each team were whistled for seven penalties.

The Seawolves and the Gophers will square off again tomorrow night at Mariucci Arena at 4:07 (AST).
