NAMPA, Idaho ? The top-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team ran into a buzz saw for the second time in three nights, losing 71-48 to host Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center on Saturday night.
The Crusaders (15-8, 8-4 GNAC) ? ranked No. 9 in the West Region ? were led by the hot shooting of forward Kristin Hein and center Jennifer Williams, who combined to make 15 of 25 field goals and score 38 points.
Meanwhile, the Seawolves (24-3, 11-2) failed to have a player score double figures scoring for the second straight game, following Thursday's 54-42 loss at 14th-ranked Seattle Pacific that snapped a 22-game win streak.
Freshman Hanna Johansson led the way with nine points (3-4 FG, 3-5 FT) for UAA, which suffered its first back-to-back losses since Jan. 2007 and the most lopsided defeat in head coach Tim Moser's three seasons.
The Seawolves fought back from an early first-half deficit to forge a 28-28 halftime tie, and then came out strong with a 9-4 burst to start the second half, going up 37-32 on Ruby Williams' traditional three-point play at the 16:33 mark.
But the home team would dominate from there as Hein (21 points, 5-5 3FG, 12 rebounds) sparked an incredible 35-4 run over the next 13 minutes. NNU shot 53 percent (17 of 32) in the second half and nailed an impressive 9 of 14 three-pointers (.643) to improve its home record to 10-0.
UAA shot 33 percent (16 of 48) from the field, including 1 of 18 from long range. Junior guard Kiki Taylor grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the loss, while senior center Rebecca Kielpinski had seven points, seven rebounds and three blocks as she struggled with foul trouble.
The Seawolves, now tied with Seattle Pacific atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings, return to the road next week, beginning with a Thursday, Feb. 26 contest at Central Washington.
