Huge Seawolf comeback earns Friday split

LAIE, Hawaii – Down two sets and staring at a third straight defeat, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team came roaring back late Friday night to knock off host Brigham Young-Hawaii, 3-2, and salvage a split of two matches at the Cannon Activities Center.

Earlier, the Seawolves dropped a 3-set affair against unbeaten Hawaii-Hilo.

UAA finishes its Hawaii trip Saturday with matches at fellow West Region rivals Chaminade (4 p.m. ADT) and Hawaii Pacific (9 p.m. ADT) in Honolulu.

Here are recaps of both of Friday's Seawolf matches:

UAA 3, BYU-Hawaii 2
The Seawolves' top three hitters all had monster performances and setter Calli Scott dished a career-high 64 assists to earn a 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 15-10 victory over BYU-Hawaii in a 2-hour contest.

Sophomore outside hitter Jackie Matthisen slammed a career-high 25 kills and senior libero Stacie Meisner equaled her career-best with 32 digs as well, giving UAA its first comeback from a 0-2 deficit since beating Northwest Nazarene at home on Oct. 3, 2003.

In all, five Seawolves posted significant career-best numbers has junior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg had 19 kills and sophomore outside hitter McKenzie Moss made 21 digs.

The Seasiders (3-5) got 12 kills from Ane Vea and 10 kills and 11 digs from Kristen Hartley. Middle blocker Tanza Buroker managed 10 kills and assisted on 10 of the home team's impressive 16 blocks.

But while BYUH won the blocking battle 16-8, UAA dominated in digs, 83-64.

After dropping heartbreakers in the first two sets, the Seawolves forged a seemingly comfortable 17-10 lead in the third frame. But a Seasider rally tied it 20-20 and threatened to make it an early night.

Moss responded with two straight kills, however, and added another on set point as UAA took it 25-21. It marked UAA's first set won against BYUH in six all-time meetings.

After an early 6-6 tie in the fourth, the Seawolves claimed an 11-7 lead on a kill by Lundberg and were scarcely threatened the rest of the set.

Knotted 6-6 once again in the fifth, Lundberg ripped two straight kills and Matthisen added another to give UAA control for good. The Seasiders crawled within 11-9 before two more Matthisen kills would end it, including match point.

Lundberg finished with a team-high seven total blocks, while Moss had 14 kills to earn her team-best third double-double of the season. Along with her team season-best 25 kills, Matthisen totaled 10 digs, marking her second double-double as a Seawolf.

Freshman middle blocker Marie Borowikow also made a nice contribution in the victory with nine kills and six block assists.

Hawaii-Hilo 3, UAA 0
Facing an undefeated team for the second straight match, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team suffered a second consecutive sweep as Hawaii-Hilo earned a 25-16, 25-11, 25-14 victory in an early afternoon match.

The Seawolves – who lost to 7th-ranked UC San Diego in their previous match Sept. 5 – were led by six kills and two blocks from Lundberg, while Meisner had a team-high eight digs.

The Vulcans (9-0) got 11 kills from senior middle blocker Fabiane Seben, while senior outside hitter Morgan Bonney notched eight kills on .500 hitting. The Pacific West Conference preseason coaches' poll favorites out-hit the Seawolves .262 to -.069, handing UAA its worst-hitting performance of the season.

The match was UAA's last on a neutral court in the regular season, finishing with a 2-2 mark in such affairs.
