Seawolves earn Saturday sweep in Honolulu

HONOLULU – Senior setter Calli Scott totaled 93 assists Saturday to boost the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a pair of road victories, beating Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific by identical 3-1 scores.

UAA (8-4) won three of its four matches on Oahu and now awaits the beginning of Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. The Seawolves host Montana State Billings in their next outing, Sept. 19 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

Here is a recap of Saturday's UAA victories:

UAA 3, Hawaii Pacific 1
Jackie Matthisen had 16 kills and fellow sophomore outside hitter McKenzie Moss totaled 15 kills and nine digs as UAA pulled out close first- and third-set victories and outlasted HPU, 26-24, 24-26, 27-25, 25-18 at St. Andrew's Priory. The evening affair lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Scott dished 47 assists, including on Matthisen's set-winning kill in the opening frame. After dropping a close second set, the Seawolves nearly blew a 21-15 led in the third before another timely kill by Matthisen and an HPU service error on set point put UAA up 2-1.

The fourth set saw 11 ties before an HPU attack error and an ace by Scott gave the Seawolves a 13-11 lead, and the Sea Warriors would get no closer.

HPU (3-6) was led by 16 kills and 12 digs from outside hitter Mariana Souza.

The Seawolves' defensive effort was once again spearheaded by libero Stacie Meisner, whose 25 digs were her second-most this season. The senior from Gering, Neb., is averaged 6.00 digs per set over the last three matches here – all UAA wins.

Middle blockers Marie Borowikow and Cortney Lundberg notched eight kills apiece for the Seawolves, while middle blocker Ashley Bates had her second strong outing of the day, hitting .625 (5 kills-0 errors-8 attacks) with four blocks and the kill on match point.

Freshman Nikkie Viotto led UAA with a personal-best three aces.

UAA 3, Chaminade 1
Lundberg blasted 17 kills and Scott paced an efficient Alaska Anchorage offense with 46 assists as the Seawolves earned a 26-24, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21 victory over Chaminade at McCabe Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Seawolves also got a combined 24 kills and 21 digs from the combo of Matthisen and Moss.

Chaminade (1-8) was led by 15 kills from Whitney Vivieros and 18 digs from libero Kristy Inamasu in the losing effort.

The first set ended up being the pivotal frame as the teams found themselves tied at 22-, 23- and 24-all. Receiving the service, Moss passed to Scott, who snuck home one of her career-high eight kills to make it 25-24. Matthisen and Bates then combined to block Chaminade's Malilmago Taoiloa on set point.

Bates had a quietly efficient match, making several big plays at critical moments. The senior from Peoria, Ariz., finished with six kills on just nine attacks, plus four block assists.

Senior libero Stacie Meisner had a match-high 21 digs as the Seawolves claimed a 65-54 edge in that department, while freshman middle blocker Marie Borowikow recorded seven kills on .353 hitting. Freshman Nikkie Viotto made a personal-best 10 digs.
