'Jackets trip short-handed Seawolves

ANCHORAGE – A fine hitting performance by sophomore Jackie Matthisen was not enough to offset the loss of senior setter Calli Scott on Friday as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team was swept 27-25, 25-18, 25-18 by Montana State Billings at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (8-5, 0-1) dropped their Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener despite getting 14 kills on .444 hitting by Matthisen, plus 12 kills from fellow outside hitter McKenzie Moss.

The Yellowjackets (7-6, 1-2) earned their first league win thanks to 17 kills and nine digs from senior outside hitter Devon Crotteau, one of the nation's hitting leaders with more than 4.5 kills per set.

With UAA leading 24-22 in the first set, Crotteau delivered two straight kills and, after a timeout, gave MSUB a 26-25 lead with another spike. Yellowjackets Jody Lutz and Jennifer Boe then combined to block UAA's Cortney Lundberg on set point, giving the visitors the early edge.

Tied 16-16 in the second set, UAA head coach Chris Green whistled for a timeout. It was at that point that Scott – the GNAC's assists-per-game leader (9.91) – left the match due to a flu virus she has been fighting all week.

Without their floor general, the Seawolves allowed the last seven points of the second set, and were never able to get on track in the third.

Scott did manage to maintain her average with 20 assists, while Lundberg tied her career-high with three solo blocks. Senior Stacie Meisner, normally the Seawolves' libero, was moved to setter in the third set and tied her career-high with seven assists. Meisner also had a match-high 14 digs.

The match was the Seawolves' lone home contest of September as they wind down a stretch in which they play 12 of 13 away from the WFSC. UAA travels to GNAC preseason favorite Western Washington on Sept. 24 to begin a four-match road trip.

Friday's match was originally scheduled for Saturday, however travel issues for MSUB resulted in the date being moved up.
