Streaks fall as UAA spikers upset WWU

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Sophomore Jackie Matthisen slammed a career-high 28 kills and senior Calli Scott dished 56 assists as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team snapped a 17-match losing streak against Western Washington with a 25-20, 17-25, 25-17, 21-25, 15-11 victory at Sam Carver Gymnasium on Thursday night.

Middle blocker Cortney Lundberg and outside hitter McKenzie Moss had 15 kills apiece for UAA (9-5, 1-1 GNAC), which had never beaten the preseason league-favorite Vikings since the Great Northwest Athletic Conference was founded in 2001.

The Vikings (9-5, 2-1) were led by 15 kills and 14 digs from outside hitter Marlayna Geary, while middle blocker Megan Amundson had 14 kills on .324 hitting.

After switching momentum in each of the first four sets, the fifth set was a microcosm of the match's giant swings.

UAA got off to a 3-0 lead thanks to three straight kills by Lundberg, but the home team called timeout and responded with the next six points. The Seawolves took over for good at that point, however, running off six consecutive points of their own, including a pair of kills each by Moss and Lundberg.

The Vikings pulled within 11-9 on a Lundberg attack error, but that was as close as it would get. Matthisen finished strong with another kill, followed by Stacie Meisner's third and final ace. A Matthisen spike accounted for a 14-10 lead, and the former East Anchorage High School star delivered again on match point moments later.

With her 28 kills, Matthisen topped her previous personal- and team-best total of 25, while her 18 digs were half a dozen more than her old career-high. Moss also recorded a double-double – her team-best fifth of the season – with 15 kills and 15 digs.

Meanwhile, Scott showed no ill effects from the flu that knocked her out of last week's home loss to Montana State Billings. In addition to her match-high assist total, the senior from Arizona also had three aces, nine digs and five block assists.

Meisner tied for match-high honors with 18 digs from the libero position.

The victory was not only the Seawolves' first over the Vikings since 1998, it also marked their first win in Bellingham in 11 tries.

UAA will try to keep its momentum going when it visits Central Washington (9-5, 1-2) in Ellensburg, Wash., at 6 p.m. ADT.
