Seawolves stun Wildcats with late rally

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Trailing by four points late in the fifth set, the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team rallied for the final six scores of the match to stun Central Washington, 17-25, 25-23, 27-25, 19-25, 15-13, at Nicholson Pavilion on Saturday night.

The Seawolves (10-5, 2-1 GNAC) got a match-high 22 kills – including match point –  from Jackie Matthisen, while fellow sophomore outside hitter McKenzie Moss had 17 kills and 21 digs.

The Wildcats were led by 18 kills and 21 digs from outside hitter Kady Try, but the Seawolves still prevailed here by a 3-2 score for the second straight year.

UAA also benefited from huge showings by senior setter Calli Scott (54 assists, career-high-tying 17 digs) and senior libero Stacie Meisner (career-high 34 digs), while junior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg had 12 kills and seven block assists.

After losing the first set, the Seawolves seemed to have things well in control at 24-16 in the second when the match started to get wild. CWU would score the next seven points to pull within one, however UAA used a timeout to stop momentum and Matthisen delivered a kill to tie it one set apiece.

The third was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than three points. Both teams failed to convert set points, leaving it tied 25-25 when Moss arose with two straight kills to end it.

UAA led early in the fourth before CWU pulled away midway though the frame.

In the fifth, the Wildcats earned the first three points and controlled all the action until taking a 13-9 lead on a Matthisen attack error.

However, with no timeouts left, the Seawolves got a kill from middle blocker Ashley Bates and followed with another by Matthisen, forcing CWU to burn its first timeout.

Matthisen then banged kills on the two ensuing points to tie it, and Try hit into the block of Bates and freshman Marie Borowikow to give UAA the lead. Another Wildcat timeout did nothing to stop the momentum as Matthisen's match-winning kill went off the block and barely landed out of bounds on UAA's side of the court.

Borowikow had a fine all-around stat line with six kills, three assists and five block assists, while Bates had three kills and five block assists.

Along with its 3-2 win at Western Washington on Thursday, tonight's victory gives UAA its first-ever road sweep of the Washington schools and marks the Seawolves' first back-to-back Great Northwest Athletic Conference road wins since 2005.

It was also CWU's first loss in six home contests this year, despite out-hitting the Seawolves .180 to .144.

The Seawolves posted team season-highs of 97 digs and 13 blocks.

UAA continues its busy September – with 12 of 13 matches away from home – with a non-conference tilt at NAIA member Rocky Mountain on Sunday in Billings, Mont. (5 p.m. ADT).
