Spikers stung again by Yellowjackets

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Alaska Anchorage volleyball team got 14 kills apiece from outside hitters McKenzie Moss and Jackie Matthisen, but host Montana State Billings pulled out close first and third sets Monday night to beat the Seawolves, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 25-15 at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

Moss also had 19 assists for UAA (10-7, 2-2 GNAC), while setter Calli Scott managed 46 assists.

The Yellowjackets (9-7, 3-2) got 19 kills and 15 digs from senior outside hitter Devon Crotteau, who leads the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and ranks among the top 10 players in Division II with 4.48 kills per set.  Fellow outside hitter Jennifer Boe had 13 kills and 14 digs as MSUB swept the season series, along with its 3-0 win in Anchorage on Sept. 18.

The Seawolves never led in the opening set, although they rallied from a 18-13 deficit to draw within 23-22 and 24-23. Crotteau would deliver on set point, however, giving the home team the early edge.

UAA dominated the second set as Matthisen – named earlier Monday as the GNAC's Player of the Week – came alive with five of her kills.

The Seawolves seemed to have things under control with a 17-11 lead in the third when the Yellowjackets forged a major momentum shift. MSUB took a 21-20 advantage on two straight Moss attack errors, and UAA escaped a set point on a Matthisen kill a few plays later, making it 24-24. But MSUB middle blocker Melissa Porter notched one of her 10 kills, and Scott was called for a ball-handling error on the next play.

After splitting the first two points of the fourth set, the Seawolves would fall into a 10-4 hole and never recover.

Middle blocker Cortney Lundberg, a junior from Hardin, Mont. (HHS/Miles CC), had eight kills and a team-high six total blocks for UAA, while freshman Marie Borowikow tallied six kills and five block assists.

Monday's match finished a grueling September for the Seawolves, who played 12 of 13 contests away from their home court. UAA returns to Anchorage to face Western Oregon (Thur., Oct. 1) and Saint Martin's (Sat., Oct. 3) as it gets seven of the final 12 matches at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex. All home matches begin at 7 p.m.
