Seawolves upset #21 CSULA, fall to #2 CSUSB

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Alaska Anchorage volleyball team continued its strong play on Friday, splitting a pair of matches with nationally ranked clubs at the Triton Invitational at RIMAC Arena. In the tournament opener, UAA had little trouble dispatching 21st-ranked Cal State-Los Angeles, 3-0, before falling to 2nd-ranked Cal State-San Bernardino, 3-1, in the second contest.

The Seawolves (4-2) return to action Saturday when they face Cal State-Dominguez Hills at 12:30 p.m. ADT and host and 7th-ranked UC San Diego at 6 p.m. ADT.

Here is a recap of Friday's UAA action:

UAA 3, #21 Cal State-Los Angeles 0
Senior setter Calli Scott dished 36 assists and junior Cortney Lundberg had UAA's best hitting percentage of the young season in a 25-14, 25-22, 25-18 upset of CSULA.

The Seawolves were also powered by a match-high 13 kills from sophomore outside hitter McKenzie Moss as they won their third straight. Lundberg, a 6-1 middle blocker, had nine kills on her first 10 attacks and finished with a sterling .625 percentage (10 kills-0 errors-16 attacks), plus five total blocks.

CSULA (2-2) was led by seven kills from Zuzana Cizova, but the Golden Eagles were out-hit .277 to .030 and out-dug 41-32 by the Seawolves.

UAA dominated the first set behind the play of Lundberg, but CSULA threatened to make it closer in the second, taking leads of 13-8 and 17-13 in that frame. Moss then blasted a kill to start a Seawolf comeback and senior Ashley Bates (3 kills, match-high 6 total blocks) notched a kill to give UAA a 21-20 edge.

After the Golden Eagles responded with a pair of kills to retake the lead, UAA head coach Chris Green called timeout and the Seawolves regrouped perfectly. Consecutive kills by Jackie Matthisen (7 kills, 12 digs) and Moss regained the advantage, and freshman Marie Borowikow followed with a block assist, then a kill on set point.

Trailing 6-5 early in the third, the Seawolves got three kills from Moss in a four-point run and never trailed again.

Senior libero Stacie Meisner made a match-high 13 digs for UAA.

The win marked the second over a top-25 ranked team in as many years under Green, whose inaugural club beat No. 8 Augustana (S.D.) last September.

#2 Cal State-San Bernardino 3, UAA 1
The Seawolves started strong behind an impressive individual effort from Moss (16 kills, .368 attack pct.), but the defending NCAA Div. II runners-up caught their stride midway through the second set and went on to beat UAA 19-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-21.

Matthisen notched 11 kills and six digs for the Seawolves, who posted a respectable .198 hitting percentage.

The Seawolves were led defensively by eight digs apiece from Meisner and Scott, plus seven from Moss.

CSUSB (5-0) got double-digit kills from three players, led by 19 from Jane Chafeh. Chafeh also had 13 digs, while teammate Ashtin Hall came up with a match-high 15.

The Coyotes were coming off a 3-1 victory over Mesa (Colo.) State earlier in the day.
