Spikers split with CSUDH, #7 UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Alaska Anchorage volleyball team finished a busy weekend at RIMAC Arena with a victory over Cal State-Dominguez Hills and a loss to 7th-ranked UC San Diego in the Triton Invitational.

The results leave the Seawolves 5-3 after two weekends of play.

Here is a recap of Saturday's UAA action:

UAA 3, Cal State-Dominguez Hills 0
Powered by 14 kills from sophomore Jackie Matthisen and a solid defensive effort, UAA earned a 25-16, 25-23, 25-14 sweep of Cal State-Dominguez Hills in an early-afternoon match.

The Seawolves also got 26 assists from senior setter Calli Scott and a team-best 10 digs from senior libero Stacie Meisner to post an important West Region victory.

The Toros (0-6) were led by six kills apiece from Heather Rushton and Madison Horsley but were held to a -.011 hitting percentage by the Seawolves.

Meanwhile, UAA, despite just a .187 hitting percentage, earned the victory with a 7-3 advantage in blocks and a 38-34 edge in digs.

The Seawolves were challenged in the second set when the Toros rallied from a 22-18 deficit to tie it 22- 22 and again at 23-23. But Matthisen, who had 13 kills before committing her first error, delivered a spike, and Meisner served an ace to take the frame.

The third set was close until the halfway point when the Seawolves erased a 12-11 disadvantage and claimed the match by winning 14 of the last 15 points. Matthisen served five straight points to begin the rally and senior middle blocker Ashley Bates served the final seven.

Matthisen, a transfer from Western Oregon, had the best hitting percentage of her career at .419 (14 kills-1 error-31 attacks), while adding seven digs.

Freshman Marie Borowikow tallied a match-best four total blocks, including three solo efforts.
