Hot-shooting Vikings stop #8 Seawolves

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Kiki Taylor and Kelsie Gourdin scored 14 points apiece Saturday, but the 8th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team received a rude welcome from Western Washington in a 78-58 loss at Carver Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (11-2, 1-1 GNAC) suffered their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference defeat as they were outshot 54 percent to 33 percent by the home club.

The Vikings (11-2, 2-0) were led by 17 points from guard Ashley Fenimore, while forward Jessica Summers had 15 points and nine rebounds to help WWU snapp a six-game losing streak to the Seawolves.

WWU led from start to finish, grabbing a 6-0 lead and stretching to 22-10 early in the first half. The Seawolves applied full-court pressure to make a quick run, getting back-to-back baskets from guard Torle Nenbee to make it 29-23 with 3:37 left in the first half.

The Vikings finished the half with a 9-2 run, however, and led by double digits throughout the second stanza.

The Seawolves also got 10 points from senior guard Tamar Gruwell, while Taylor led the way with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

UAA returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 14 (7 p.m. AST), when it hosts Montana State Billings in its GNAC home debut at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex (7 p.m. AST).
